Barr-Harris Children's Grief Center |
There is help for children facing the pain of death, divorce, separation, or abandonment.
Barr-Harris's core missions are to provide affordable and geographically accessible grief counseling and grief therapy services to Chicago-area children (ages 2-18) and families who have suffered loss; to increase public awareness of the immediate and long-term effects of traumatic loss in childhood; and to provide training and consultation about childhood grief to those working directly with children or on their behalf.
The Barr-Harris Center serves:
- Children who have lost a father or mother through death, illness, divorce, or abandonment.
- Children who have lost a sibling or other family member through death.
- Children with a parent or other family member facing imminent death.
- Parents and other family members.
- Children who suffer loss due to violence or trauma.
The Center provides:
Grief Therapy and Grief Counseling Services (see Locations for Counseling Services)
- Diagnostic evaluations of the child, parent, or other family members, to determine needs.
- Short and long-term treatment if needed.
- Child guidance to the surviving parent or custodial adult.
Although the Center has a set fee for services, a sliding scale of fees may be used so that no family is denied services for financial reasons.
Services to Schools and the Community (phone (312) 922-7474, X 310 or e-mail:
j-schiffman@northwestern.edu)
- Educational presentations to schools, agencies, community groups and self-help groups.
