Barr-Harris Child & Family Grief Program

Since 1976, the Barr-Harris Child & Family Grief Program has offered specialized care to children, adolescents, and their families who have experienced loss. The Grief Services clinic has a broad definition of loss, which could include the death of a loved one, loss through separation such as divorce or incarceration, community violence as well as other types of loss. The goal is to help in the aftermath of this type of trauma in order to mitigate the potentially harmful short and long-term effects. Services through this clinic are often provided at a reduced fee to lessen financial barriers to treatment.

The Barr-Harris Child & Family Grief program is distinct in its deep understanding of the unique grieving process and the need to provide both immediate relief and therapy when needed in the continuum of care provided by the Treatment Center. Psychodynamic therapy is, at its core, a trauma-informed approach. With the goal of examining the past as a way of understanding a person’s way of thinking, feeling, and behaving in the present, our depth-oriented therapeutic approach promotes the exploration of developmental trauma, the impact of one’s environment, and other influences that address the question “what happened to you?” and “how can we help?” rather than “what’s wrong with you?” or “how can we fix you?”
